Material Culture

Houston Kitchen-Jan Showers

Seeking a “light and timeless” aesthetic for a kitchen in Houston, Texas, the designer first selected Danby marble from I.M.C., a very dense material that’s “marvelous for kitchen countertops.” Though she likes the look of subway tiles, she instead chose to line the backsplash in a running brick pattern of four-inch squares ceramic Artemesia tiles from Waterworks’ Cottage Collection. November Rain, a subtle grey paint from Benjamin Moore, covers the cabinetry. A satin nickel Europlus II fixture from Grohe is “utilitarian but has an inherent softness that works so well with marble.”
