As many of you know who read my Notebook regularly, I admire the work and taste of David Hicks. His aesthetic and mine are similar in many ways. I think his designs stand the test of time. When you look at the many, many images of Hicks’ work, only the photography looks dated---never the design.

The great thing for all of us who love his designs is that he wrote so many books on the subject that we can all learn from and enjoy. Most are out of print, but available on Amazon.

So, I am using Mr. Hicks words to describe some of my favorite images---remember, these are his words, not mine, although I’ve certainly made many statements on design that are similar---maybe that is why I like him so much.

“A floorplan, however simple, is a basic necessity before attempting to arrive at a colour scheme or even a mental picture of the final look of the room as a whole. It is the manner in which we put our rooms together---the arrangements of the furniture, the lighting and hanging of pictures, the placing of objects, the style of the curtains, etc. which makes a good or poor room.”

“I like all rooms to look as if they are really lived in, but above all, I believe that every room should reflect the personality and taste of the owner.” It’s like watching a mystery in a way---actually, it’s quite unpredictable. Some of the 7 year olds turn out much as they predicted themselves. Others will surprise you and sometimes break your heart----you always remember them at 7 because Apted replays them at 7 in each episode. They are now at 56. Apted is an accomplished director (He also directed Coal Miner’s Daughter and Gorillas in the Mist.) , but he considers this series the seminal achievement of his career.

Read a book by Ian McEwan---many of you already have, I’m sure, but if you haven’t, start with Enduring Love and move right through all of his books. Atonement is the most famous and received more awards than any of the others. I must say that Solar was not a favorite---so either skip it or try it last. McEwan is a great storyteller and always surprises you.

Try going gluten free---it’s simply amazing what is does for your body. Jim and I don’t do it for weight loss purposes, though that can be a side effect. I do practice what I preach by the way and have been religiously GF for well over a year. We did lots of research on how to replace the GF foods we loved. Believe me there is a replacement for everything---even great pastas. Hotels and restaurants are now offering so many gluten free choices.

Wear what you want to wear and what looks good on you---not what is on trend. This is what the best dressed women and men I know do. It is entirely possible to interpret trends, but there is nothing worse than a fashion victim.

Go to the Perot Museum and stay for 3 hours interacting and learning. One of the most educational institutions to happen to Dallas ever.

Mark Bradford exhibit at the DMA

Visit the contemporary galleries at the DMA and take a fresh look---an amazing collection! Don’t forget---free memberships will be available on January 21.

If you live in Dallas or are visiting, go to Rafa’s on Lovers Lane on a Sunday and sit in the bar to eat real Tex Mex. It feels like a dive, which is fun and the food is authentic.

A House Is Not A Home by Bruce Weber

Go to Half Price Books or any used book store and find amazing out-of-print art, design, fashion and photography books. I adore art and photography books as well as design, of course. One of my favorite finds is Bruce Weber’s A House is not a Home. In the world of design, look for any book by or about David Hicks. Mark Hampton’s books should be required reading for anyone interested in design---Legendary Decorators of the 20th Century and Mark Hampton on Decorating

Do a double feature and see some of the smaller movies that are so wonderful this year such as Beasts of the Southern Wild and Amour?

It is because first impressions are so important that I place careful emphasis on the entry in a home. It’s the first thing your guests will see, and yet it is so often forgotten. Most of the pieces in your entry will already be in place long before you’re planning to entertain. A good entry has wall coverings that give warmth and life to the room and art to add visual interest. There should also be a comfortable place to remove shoes or coats and a lovely rug to accentuate, not cover your floors.

If there’s room in your entry, add a small vignette of furniture and accessories. I like to add a pretty antique commode flanked by chairs, with a beautiful Murano glass lamp. You can display a couple of glass accessories and add a small arrangement of flowers. I like to use purple or white hyacinths in bunches in a simple clear glass vase because their fragrance is so enchanting.

The moment a guest walks in the door, greet them with a warm hello and a tray of cocktails, wine and water. If you don’t have the budget for waiters, they should be on a table or butler’s tray.

A tray of hors d’oeuvres needs to follow quickly---something to eat is a necessity when serving alcohol. Be sure appetizers are always bite size---that means no larger than a quarter! Nothing worse that something you can’t pop in your mouth with food falling out onto the floor. It’s a great idea to serve these on interesting trays---silver is always good, but I like to use unusual trays depending on my menu.

Most coffee tables are too high and too teetery. Very few of them are as big as they might well be. Ideally the table before the sofa should be just a little lower than the seat of the sofa. “Entertaining is Fun!” Dorothy Draper. Chapter 2, Making Your House Say Welcome

If you make one investment in your living room it should be an attractive coffee table. It’s the center of interest in almost any room and the piece of furniture most people will gather around. Large coffee tables are ideal for entertaining and everyday life. I like to style mine with colorful books about various interests and an exotic orchid. The key when accessorizing a coffee table is to make it full, yet simple---and it’s another great place to add trays of hors d’oeuvres.

Decorating the dinner table for any occasion is a direct challenge to your imagination. “Entertaining is Fun!” Dorothy Draper. Chapter 5, Dinner Parties

I often see tables that are overdone. It’s best to keep it simple. There’s nothing more chic than a table decorated with simple, but fine china and linens, beautiful glass pieces and understated floral arrangements that are always below eye level.
Above all, look carefully to the lighting of your rooms. Think of the pains a stage director is at to light his stage and every character on it.
I agree with Mrs. Draper wholeheartedly on the subject of lighting. There is almost nothing more important. It sets the mood for your party, and determines how you and your guests look and feel. Eye level lighting is crucial, as it is flattering.

Cocktails today are not quite as formal as they used to be.
In Most Houses the host and hostess sit at opposite ends of the table……It lets them look out for all the guests and keeps the conversation moving around the table. But here, too, there is no set rule……If it’s a very long table try to put a woman who is lively and vivacious halfway down it. She will keep things going around her, while you hold up your end and your husband entertains those around him. “Entertaining is Fun!” Dorothy Draper. Chapter 5, Dinner Parties

When hosting a sit down dinner, seating is very important----it can make or break your party. I prefer to sit in the middle of a long table, so I can see most of my guests, and keep the conversation flowing. I try to seat my guests next to someone I know they will find interesting. I never seat a couple together and I try to steer clear of partnering people with wildly opposite views.

The most important thing when entertaining is to have fun! Stressing over the details is not the recipe for a fabulous party.
TRENDS AND TIMELESS

Talk about fashion is often about TRENDS----the latest trends for the current season and what the next “big thing” or “must-have” will be. Like any fashion enthusiast, I do pay attention to trends, but it is important to me in fashion, as in interiors, that what I wear or design will always be in style. I never wish to be a fashion victim---a fashion victim is someone who wears trends just because they are trends, whether they are suitable for them or not. This is the reason that I look to such style and design icons as Frances Elkins, David Hicks, Grace Kelly, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Their style was always appropriate and looks as fresh now as it did then.

Contrast in design is important for so many reasons. It draws the eye in a way that subtle color combinations do not. Graphic black and white was very popular in the mid 1960’s with the emergence of Op Art. It makes a statement in a room, while remaining timeless.

Leather conveys a luxurious aesthetic unlike any other material. It's wonderful on dining chairs, especially if they are vintage and the leather is original---leather only improves with age. They look current, yet add character. I love the timeless style of this caramel colored leather dress from The Row. It looks modern now but will look great ten years from now.

Rouge, sometimes called oxblood is a color I have always loved. I have a vintage Hermes Kelly bag in rouge that I’ve had for many years and it still looks amazing with all of my clothes today. Rouge is a neutral--- it looks smart with brown, black, navy, animal prints and almost any fall color. It was a big trend for Fall 2011 and it is still everywhere this year. I added the Rouge lamp to the Venetian Series in JS Collection because it works well with so many colors.

There is something about mixing old and new that gives your look character. It says that your room or outfit has been thoughtfully curated--- not thrown together from one period or one designer.
The September Issue

The September Issue

September is my favorite month in the publishing world. Magazines have their biggest and best issues of the year and it’s a great way to get back in the swing of things when summer is over. This year, I thought we’d do a special series of Notebook posts dedicated to just that. Stay tuned all this month for my version of the September Issue. The first installment is Fashion and Interiors….A Story of Style.

Fashion and Interiors….A Story of Style.

Fashion is very important to me----and inspires my designs. I draw fashion inspiration from everywhere--- couture shows, street style, fashion websites and of course, fashion magazines. Celebrity style is a constant parade of the good, the bad and the ugly. However, there are a few tastemakers who always inspire me.

Grace Kelly

I love the style of modern women, but I am often influenced by classic Hollywood glamour. Grace Kelly is one of the most stunning celebrities of her time or any period, and still looks current today. She embodies classic glamour----I keep that in mind when choosing both clothing and interiors. Her soft blue green silk satin gown has an air of understated elegance. I love to use this color in interiors. It mixes well with a variety of styles and is timeless and chic.

Gwenyth Paltrow

She exudes timeless elegance. She is the Grace Kelly of her generation----- I always love how she looks, whether she is casual, or formally dressed. Her Oscar dress this year was perfection. Nothing is more chic than all white and this Tom Ford is effortlessly cool on Gwenyth. All white, when done correctly, has the same effect in interiors that it does in fashion. It creates an aesthetic that is both fresh and sophisticated as well as a great background for art.

Rooney Mara

One of the first designers I worked with often told me that a touch of black was an essential element in any room. Black is a neutral, but it’s also dramatic and provides contrast. Rooney Mara always looks striking and glamorous. This fabulous black lace gown designed by Givenchy is a beautiful contrast to her porcelain doll features, and such a modern way to wear lace, which can often be aging.

Diane Kruger

I love the way Diane Kruger dresses. She wears couture so well and embodies modern glamour. The deep purple and drama of feathers in a dress designed by Prada is flirty and fun. A well-executed pop of purple is ultra glamorous in designing rooms as well.

Kiernan Shipka

Child stars are adopting their own versions of the grown-up red carpet looks. Kiernan Shipka, who plays Sally Draper in Mad Men, is sweet and age appropriate in this lady-like combination of cream and blush. You can never go wrong with ivory accented with a soft color like blush. The mixture of these colors is feminine and classic.

Cate Blanchett

You can count on Cate Blanchett to look like a movie star. Her style is iconic. Metallics work well in fashion and interiors because of their unusual texture and sheen. They evoke feelings of old-Hollywood glamour and give a richness to any aesthetic.

Remember, You don't have to be a celebrity or a movie star to be well-dressed and have Glamorous Rooms.

I decided to keep a diary of this trip----our good friends, Lauren Gurvich and Jeremy King who live in London are getting married. Lauren grew up in New Orleans and has been a dear friend of Elizabeth’s and ours for over 20 years. Jeremy is British and owned The Ivy, Le Caprice and J. Sheeky in London for many years. He sold those restaurants and opened the fabulous Wolseley, the Delaunay, Brasserie Zédel and Colbert. The most exciting news is that Jeremy will open The Beaumont, a hotel in Mayfair in 2014 ---it should be spectacular---everything Jeremy does is top drawer.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6----arrive at DFW at 3:30 for a 5:30 flight to London. On the way to the airport, we see a huge storm in the distance. It is unfortunately right over DFW. Flight delayed for 4 hours, but finally off after thinking the flight would be cancelled.

THURSDAY, JUNE 7---Arrive in London in time to check into Claridge’s, take a quick nap, then get ready for a party at the flat I’ve been decorating for Lauren and Jeremy. I am so eager to see results of our work over the past few months.

WHAT'S NEW IN JAN SHOWERS COLLECTION

Each new year comes with a new collection. I love the fact that unlike fashion, we only present one a year! We are designing all year long---right now, my mind is on next year’s new product, but all of last year, our design team was creating the pieces you are going to see here today. For every piece you see here, there were probably 2 or 3 other ideas, or even versions made. These are the stars that made the cut.

The Tripod Table in Parchment

The Tripod Table in parchment is one of my favorites. Of course, it is available in all of our wood finishes, but I do love this parchment finish. We were inspired by an antique table from France. I thought it would be perfect as a lamp table, something that could be added next to a sofa or chair---you know I always say every sofa and chair deserves a table. The details are what make it special. The custom bronze fittings, small drawer and shape of the legs are elements that make it look like an antique, even though it is a new piece of furniture. All of our pieces are custom, so it can be made larger or smaller. In this photo, it is sitting next to our Salon Sofa. The lamp is the Venetian Series #3 in Moonstone.

 The Bradshaw Chair in Walnut

The Bradshaw Chair (named after one of our clients) is probably one of my favorite chairs in the JS Collection. It was inspired by a vintage find that we had refinished in ebony for the showroom. With the dark finish and a high contrast ivory mohair upholstery, the chair came to life. We had a huge response to it from our clients and customers so we decided to add it to the Collection. It is truly handsome and very comfortable. The ovals on the arms are hand carved and the legs have custom bronze sabots.

The Violet Lamp

The Caroline Settee is not new this year---but a wonderful piece that was adapted from the Caroline Chair. The Violet Lamp is new and the color is so neutral----there is really no color scheme it doesn’t work with. I decided to add this color to the Collection after seeing a fabulous piece of violet glass at one our factories in Murano. I couldn’t get the color out of my mind and I decided that it would be perfect in a lamp! I think people often shy away from violet because they think it will overpower their room, but it can add an unexpected element, especially when mixed with amber, green, brown, yellow or gold.

The Moonglow Lamp is a real star! You really have to see it in person to appreciate its scale and coloration. It was inspired by vintage Murano glass lamps in both style and color. We considered calling it the “Candy Lamp” because it looks like a piece of wrapped candy! It is highly opalescent and has the most wonderful oval shape with a custom rectangular lacquered shade.
Our newest mirror is an oval soleil that is gold leafed---it is one of the largest I’ve seen at almost 5 ft tall, and makes such a stunning statement wherever you place it. I have considered adding a soleil mirror to the Collection for quite some time, but hesitated because there are so many already out there----There are none like this one! I love that this is not only oval, but overscaled. In this photograph, it is hanging in an entry above our Carlisle Console, which was inspired by an English Regency antique. The Marnie Chairs flank it and add another wonderful element with their white cowhide upholstery. HIGH GLAM!

Adding a white piece like the Sophia to a room instantly increases the glamour quotient. We think white is the freshest, sexiest look right now.

How great for Dallas to be one of the two museums in the U.S. (it goes to The Fine Art Museum of San Francisco, de Young next) to get this show. Dallas has never staged a fashion exhibition---this is a first. What a first!
